Character

Name: Czeslaw Meyer
Fandom: Baccano
Gender: Male
Age: Over 200 years old (physically 10)

Time Period: Book 1932 – after his talk with Rachel

Wing Color: Light brown with two blood red colored feathers in the ends of each wing

History: Czeslaw Meyer was orphaned at an early age. When the alchemist Fermet took him in, Czeslaw looked up to the man as someone to idolize, a kind soul. In 1711, when Czeslaw was ten years old, he and Fermet joined a group of alchemists crossing the Atlantic of the Advenna Avis. They summoned a demon who gave them the elixir of life. Following Fermet's lead, Czeslaw drank.

The demon explained the rules of immortality. Immortals could not use fake names in front of other immortals; they could share knowledge by putting their right hand on another immortal's head; they could also kill another immortal by placing their hand on their head and thinking "I wish to eat." Devouring another immortal would give them all their memories and knowledge. One of the alchemists, Szilard Quates, promptly went dizzy with the promise of gaining knowledge by killing other immortals and went on a murder spree, eating as many as he could. Czeslaw managed to survive, but would only face worse in his years to come.

Fermet wanted to test the limits of immortality and saw the perfect lab rat in Czeslaw. For years Fermet tortured Czeslaw, repeatedly killing him the worst ways he could devise- an acid bath, burning alive and more. Trapped in his immortality, Czeslaw was forced to endure the pain and repeated deaths for years. The last bits of his faith in humanity slipped away, and when he got the chance he devoured Fermet. The move freed him physically, but the experience had left him trapped in a cage of paranoia. He tried to avoid getting close to humans, and especially other immortals. He was certain they would devour him.

In December of 1931 Czeslaw boarded the Flying Pussyfoot, a train running from Chicago to New York. As the tensions between the New York based Gandor and Runurata Families built up, a Runurata capo had entered into business with Czeslaw for some explosives.

Feigning childishness, Czeslaw started the journey playing with Senator Berriam's daughter, Mary. While in the dining car, he realized there was another immortal on board when he was prevented from using a fake name. He immediately went on guard, plotting to uncover the immortal so he could devour them first.

When a battle between white suit leader Ladd Russo and the Lemures broke out in the Dining Car, Czeslaw decided to use Ladd's brute strength to his advantage. In the meantime, however, he had to keep up his childish facade. Mary's mother, sensing she and her daughter were in danger, told Czes to take Mary out of the dining car. They manages to escape the Lemures and Czes hid Mary in a closet so he would not be burdened by her.

Later, Czes attempted to stike up a deal with Ladd in the baggae car. Czeslaw revealed that he was bringing explosives to New York, and offered Ladd a large sum of money if he would kill everyone in the Dining Car. He did not reveal his motives- to locate the last immortal. He offered his leftover explosives as a diversion, and was confident he could get Ladd on his side. But he underestimated the man's reason, and Ladd killed him simply for the confident look on his face. Ladd and his men exited before Czes revived.

Unfortunately for Czes, Claire Stanfield- a.ka. the Rail Tracer- witnessed it all. As Czes sat and considered his situation in an empty train car, Claire approached him and was not at all fooled by his charade of childishness. Czeslaw again became victim to a horrifying multitude of tortures. Hours later, Isaac and Miria found his battered body, lacking an arm and much blood that still had to catch up with the speeding train. While reaching for Czes, Isaac and Miria fell off the train with his body. Only the quick actions of Rachel, Claire and Donny saved them.

When the mass of blood and body parts of Czes finally caught up with the train to reattach, Isaac and Miria attempted to protect Czes, believing it was the Rail Tracer. Upon gaining conciousness, Czes found himself not being rejected by Isaac and Miria- but praised. They took him with them as they exited the train and presented him to their friend Ennis as her new baby brother.

Personality:  When you first meet Czes, you see an innocent, playful, polite and just an average ten year old boy.  Though it is, for the most part, true that Czes is always this way in front of people, he does have a much darker and more tragic side to him than he lets out.  It’s really only the people that know him who know what he can really be like and who he really is.

For starters, Czes is an immortal.  He drank an elixir that made him that way when he was ten years old in the 1700’s.  Being over two hundred years old, he knows the way of the world and how to get by in it.  He knows how to manipulate people to get what he wants, like how he planned to use Ladd to find the immortal on the train, how to get money by making deals with the mafia and just how to survive.

Although being immortal does have its perks, like not being able to die for one, this does not exclude the fact that immortals can’t feel pain.  They can in fact feel every bit of pain inflicted on them and this pain is something that Czes fears experiencing the most.  In the first few years of his immortal life, Czes was forced to endure severe methods of torture.  Being dipped in acid baths, being burned alive and even having a hot tongs pushed into his eyes were just some of the few ways he was tortured.

Czes is a coward and yet he isn’t.  Because of his immortality he shows no fear of ‘dying’ or putting himself in harm’s way.  If putting himself in such a dangerous position means getting what he wants in the end, he isn’t afraid to do it.  But this so called courage isn’t just because he knows he’s immortal, it’s also because he knows that no matter how he is killed, it’s nothing compared to what he has been through before.  Of course, there are those select people, like Claire, who know how to torture him in a way that actually scares him.  It’s with these types of people that Czes truly shows how cowardly he can be.  He can’t even stand being in a room with them for more than five minutes without screaming and running away, even if they make no attempt to hurt him.

Being tortured for years on end by the person he trusted most in the world, Czes’ trust in people, mainly immortals, is practically at zero.  He solely believes that if an immortal were to find him, they would devour him on the spot so he makes it his mission to devour any immortals that approach him, first.  Of course it isn’t only immortals that he doesn’t trust, there are some mortals, like Claire, that know how to hurt him in a way that’ll scar him.  He does his best to keep on his toes and keep away from those who can be seen as a threat.  To avoid people like them, he either gives them a false name when introducing himself (since immortals aren’t allowed to do that and are forced to give their true names whether they want to or not if they’re near each other) or by acting innocent and keeping the appearance and attitude of a normal ten year old boy in check.

Of course, none of this goes without really pointing out again, that Czes is just a kid.  Though he is much, much older than any other human being and even wiser, he still has the mind of a ten year old.  Even if it’s an involuntary action, Czes does like to play around and act his own age—or at least act the age that his mind still believes he is.  A good example of his childish tendencies was when he ran around on the train, playing with Mary and like when he ran around one of the storage cars, acting like he was a plane.  And as a normal scared young boy, he only desires to be with people he can trust, or people he wants to trust, but as paranoid as he is, it’s difficult for him.

Strengths: Physical: Because Czes is an immortal, he cannot die.  Any injuries inflicted on him will quickly regenerate and it will be as if he was never harmed in the first place.

Mental/Emotional: Despite the fact that Czes has the appearance of a ten year old, the way he thinks and acts outside of his child-like tendencies is much more mature than any kid.  He knows how to manipulate people

He is also able to stare death in the eye and not be afraid of it.  He can and will, willingly, put his life on the line if he desires something bad enough.  Much like how he confronted Ladd about killing the people in the first class car without fearing the possibility of getting killed himself.

Weaknesses: Physical: Although Czes is immortal, this does not mean he has the ability to fight like Firo or any of the others.  In fact, he relies more on his regenerating ability than anything.

Mental/Emotional: After being tortured for several years on end by the person he trusted the most, one can easily say that Czes is mentally scarred.  Trusting people, mainly immortals, is one thing that’s incredibly difficult for him to do because he fears that in the end, they will only end up devouring him or inflict pain on him.  There are cases when he does fear a mortal, like Claire, because they are able to hurt him like Fermet once did.

First person:  Hello there everyone!  I was wondering, are any of you up for playing a game?  You see, I’m pretty bored and I thought something like this would be fun! [He pauses, almost like he’s trying to make a dramatic effect]  I want you to guess my name!  If you get it right, I’ll give you something real special as a reward!

For every wrong name  you give me, you have to answer a question for me.  If you can’t get it after let’s say… three tries, just come talk to me in person and I’ll tell you.  I don’t want people to be able to see it over these journal things.  I’m not giving you all any hints either!

Does that sound fair?  I think it does!  [He chuckles] Let the games begin.

Third person:
It’s an unusual place for a ten year old boy to wake up, a bar.  Sleeping on the cold ground, under a table, while music plays off to his side, the boy can’t help but stir a little.  Slowly drifting back to consciousness, Czes opens his brown eyes only to stare at the brown wood table above him.  At first, he just stares at it, confused then turns his head to the side.

There are people.  He can’t see them, but there are a few pairs of legs just walking around or staying still.  If they’re talking, he can’t make out what they’re saying, but just knowing they’re there isn’t good.  It doesn’t look like he’s in the Alveare either so that makes things worse.

Slowly, Czes begins to sit up when…

Thunk

…His head comes into contact with the table that’s above him and he instantly ducks down, hands over his head.  Without even noticing it, he had closed his eyes.  Was he afraid they heard him?  If they now knew he was there?  Yes.

But as he opens his eyes to see if anyone heard or is coming to grab him, he notices nothing changed.  The people are still where they were before and the music is still playing.  He can’t help but sigh in relief.  He scoots back towards the wall behind him and rests against it, knees up against his chest and his arms rest there on the top of his knees.

Unfortunately though, he knows he can’t stay under the table and hide forever.  They’re bound to catch him sooner or later and that won’t be good.  He needs to be able to get the upper hand in this and figure out who here is immortal before anyone can figure him out and devour him.

So hesitantly, the young boy crawls out from under the table and takes another look around, counting the number of people in the bar to make sure he got it right the first time.  Luckily not many are there, but there’s no telling what will happen if he isn’t careful.  Taking a deep breath, he decides to go to the counter first, putting on an innocent face so he looks like a lost child.

“E-Excuse me, sir?”
